We write Articles with Research Backing to help everyone be better humans.
Welcome Fellow Misfits!
We are a group that questions social norms and doesn't fall in line with the status quo. We set boundaries, ask questions, clarify, communicate openly and honestly, and advocate for ourselves and others. We want to teach everyone these mysterious, life-defining, ways instead of continuing the many myths that lead to abusive behaviors, often propelled by lack of information, fear of vulnerability, or fear of the unknown. We are here to wade through the muck of life with you.
Listen, we are not perfect. Neither are you. You knew this already, but it bears highlighting. We're not going to sell you perfection, or any version of "Do this, and you’ll have the best life ever!” malarky. We also have no interest in listicles or unfounded opinion articles disguised as fact. This is simply a campaign, formed through hope and bad decisions, to improve the state of the world one tweet, insta-post, zine, or blog post at a time. At the end of the day, it’s you who has to put in the work and implement the changes.
We aim to provide evidence-based information to help you improve your relationships and quality of life. It won’t be easy, but friend, discomfort is where growth happens. Keep that in mind.
Our creds? Undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Additionally, there is a hobby of perusing scientific journals for the latest and greatest in psychology and counseling.
We're here to tell you all the stuff you didn’t learn or need a reminder of, as you fumble through the darkness of adulthood. Growing up, we aren’t taught how to communicate, advocate for ourselves, set boundaries, or anything that may help with growing and sustaining relationships with ourselves and others. This is where Metacog Misfits comes in. We want to leverage education and experience to set the record straight on how to ‘be a good human’ - whatever that ultimately means.
Each week a tip or suggestion will be posted on social media with an article on our website providing more in-depth information. Try out the tips, or don’t! But please don’t send screenshots of our stuff to loved ones in a passive-aggressive attempt to change their behavior. Yeah? Can we all agree this is lame? Cool.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is/are Metacog Misfits?
Great question. Metacog Misfits is a company run by people ascribing to the punk ethos while advocating for a better society. Metacog is short for metacognition or self-awareness. The term "Misfits" is a reference to The Misfits. The idea is that we're self-aware and are using this self-awareness, as well as educational backgrounds and relevant research, to communicate knowledge to the general public to combat unhelpful social norms that frankly, aren't serving us anymore.
Why the Misfits?
1. They are an amazing band, so why the fuck not?
2. We're going to be saying things that will ruffle some feathers and upset people because it pops their comfort bubble and forces them to question how they have been living their life, sort of like a social misfit.
What do you specialize in?
- Perusing scientific journals for mental health research that can be distilled into a more accessible format for the average person.
- Writing articles promoting different ways for people to function in relation to themselves and others.
- Creating various types of art and collaborating with others to make something that is both cool to look at and informative.
What are your terms and conditions?
Try to be a good human, damn it.
While educational backgrounds work to support the work we are doing at Metacog, we are not doctors or licensed mental health professionals, and we are not operating under such licenses.

Aren't punks against establishment and calling themselves punk?
Sure. Some punks don't call themselves punk and feel their steeze should speak for itself, otherwise its considered conformity. There's nothing wrong with that, but this is a group that goes against the grain, to the best of its ability, intending to improve people's lives. We chose to make punk part of the brand, given our values and the overall mission of this group.
Will some people hate us? Yup. Will some not give a damn? Yup. Will some like us? Yup. This is how life works, people.
What is this "how to be a good human" thing?
It's the social campaign we are running to improve the world. It may be a lofty mission, but with the state of things these days, we have to try. We're working to provide the world with better humans and be better humans ourselves.
That statement is going to piss some people off. Totally fair. But here's the deal, we all have areas in our lives where we can improve, including us at Metacog Misfits.
Let us wade through the muck of life with you and lend a helping hand. Maybe you don't set boundaries with others when you need to, or perhaps you're not as brilliant as a communicator as you once thought. We're here to provide the tools, and it's up to you to implement them.
